ASHEVILLE, N.C. - USC Upstate got a goal from Dave Musambi midway through the first half and that was enough for the Spartans to edge homestanding UNC Asheville 1-0.

The visitors out-shot the Bulldogs (1-1-0) 15-7. Asheville goalkeeper Dan Jackson played well in defeat with seven saves, including a save on a penalty kick in the second half.

The home team did not record a shot in the first half but came alive in the second half with seven shots. However, Spartan goalkeeper Dani Alvardo made four saves to record his first shutout of the season.

USC Upstate (1-1-0) controlled play from the start of the match and scored in the 22nd minute. Kareem Richardson dribbled into the Bulldog zone before making a nice pass to Musambi hit a shot from 10 yards out to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead at 22:12.

In the second half, Asheville was called for a foul in the box in the 56th minute. Dylan Hoop was selected by the Spartans to try and extend the lead. However, his shot was stopped by Jackson keeping the match at 1-0.

Asheville got three shots from freshman Trey Hemphill, two on goal but the Bulldogs could not find the back of the net.

The Bulldogs are in action Thursday afternoon at home when they host Appalachian State at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m.
