ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Longwood scored on a penalty kick in the 73rd minute to pick up its first ever win in Big South Conference play as the Lancers edged UNC Asheville 1-0 Sunday afternoon.

Devlin Pierce scored at 73:27 after the Bulldogs were called for a foul in the box. Longwood was awarded the PK. Pierce was able to sneak the ball into the left corner of the goal area past the diving Dan Jackson for the only goal of the match. The Lancer program is in its first year of competition in the Big South Conference.

Asheville (1-4-0, 0-1-0 BSC) held a 12-11 advantage in shots and 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

"We are disappointed with final result today, but I am very proud of the high quality of soccer that the group played today," stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. "Longwood held on to a 1-0 result, and they get full credit for securing the result.

"As head coach I have to do a better job with our off the ball movement in the final third and our technique going to goal and serving from wide positions," added Kern.

David Parra gave Asheville a real spark off the bench as he fired three shots on goal. He just missed tying the game with 10 minutes when he blasted a shot that just went wide.

Paul Egle and Kenneth Lingerfelt had three shots each for the Bulldogs.

Longwood (1-4-0, 1-3-0 BSC) got a great match from goalkeeper Carl Carpenter who made four saves to earn his first career shutout.

Asheville had just missed scoring when an Egle shot was saved by Carpenter with 18 minutes left. Longwood countered and moved quickly into the goal area when Jonathan Kukapa was tripped in the box. The foul was quickly called and a PK awarded. It was Pierce's first goal of the season.

The Bulldogs battled in the final 15 minutes but just could not get the equalizer past Carpenter.

Asheville plays next in the Radford Invitational this weekend. The Bulldogs face Marshall at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and then play Marist Sunday at 1 p.m.
