CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville men's basketball team was picked to finish in third place this year in the Big South Conference's South Division behind Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina in the league's preseason poll. The vote was done by the conference's head coach and media panel.

With a record 12 members in the 2012-13 season, the Big South will have divisional play in men's basketball for the first time in league history.  Campbell was picked to win the North Division.

Charleston Southern received its first ever preseason No. 1 ranking, as the Bucs tallied 157 points and 16 first-place votes. CSU returns four starters and 10 letterwinners from last year's team that finished 19-12 and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament.

Coastal Carolina was second in the South Division voting with 147 points and eight first-place nods. UNC Asheville, the defending Big South champions, finished third with 130 votes and five first-place votes. Winthrop claimed fourth (67 votes), followed by Gardner-Webb (58 votes) and Presbyterian College (50 votes).

The Bulldogs return just one starter from last year's record-setting 24-10 season in senior forward Jeremy Atkinson. Atkinson made the league's preseason All-Conference second team. The Elm City, N.C. native averaged 11.7 points and a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game last year. He earned a spot on the Big South All Tournament team by averaging 17 points and seven rebounds in three tournament games. Atkinson shot .546 from the field and was fourth on the team in assists with 76.

"We're excited about the start of the season," commented Asheville Associate Head Coach Nick McDevitt on Tuesday. McDevitt was on hand for the media day in place of head coach Eddie Biedenbach who could not attend due to a death in the family.

"We're going to be a different team this year," added McDevitt. "You can't replace the experience we had last season.

"But we believe we've brought in a talented recruiting class and have some guys ready to step up," McDevitt also said. "Our guys are looking forward to the challenge of this season."

The veteran assistant coach believes the Big South is going to be extremely competitive this season.

"We're in a tough division in the South but then the North is pretty strong, as well," admitted McDevitt. "We're going to see close and exciting games throughout the year."

This year's Big South Tournament will be a combined affair with the men's and women's teams coming to Myrtle Beach for the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Basketball Championships the week of March 5-10 at the HTC Center on the campus of Coastal Carolina.

The Bulldogs will play an exhibition game on Nov. 5 when they host Brevard College at Kimmel starting at 7 p.m. Asheville's first regular-season game is also at Kimmel Arena when the Bulldogs take on Western Carolina on Friday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
