SAN JUAN, P.R. - The UNC Asheville Bulldogs prepared for its game with Tennessee on Thursday with two practices. The Bulldogs are participating in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Tournament that starts on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. when they play the Volunteers.
Thursday's game will be televised by ESPNU and broadcast locally on WWNC Radio (570-AM) with the pre-game show starting at Noon.
Asheville will look for its first ever win over Tennessee as the Bulldogs have lost all eight meetings between the teams. This is the first time the teams have played anywhere but in Knoxville. The teams played last year with UT edged Asheville, 72-68.
Eddie Biedenbach's team worked hard today as the Bulldogs face a Tennessee team that returns four starters from last year's 19-15 squad.
The first practice took place at Coliseo Ruben Rodriquez which is right next to the baseball stadium where the Florida Marlins played several home games several years ago. The tournament will be played at the 12,000-seat Coliseo Ruben Rodriquez. Asheville practiced later in the day at a local high school.
"We worked hard today and had some good workouts," stated Biedenbach. "We have a chance to do well in this tournament, but we're going to have be at our absolute best to have a chance at winning any of the games we play here."
All the teams in the tournament came together for a dinner Wednesday night. ESPN announcer Jon Sciambi spoke at the banquet.
Asheville plays again on Friday at either 10:30 a.m. or 1 p.m. against either Akron or Oklahoma State. If the Bulldogs win, they play at 10:30. A loss would put Friday's game at 1 p.m.
The teams will take a day off on Saturday to tour Puerto Rico and then finish up the tourney on Sunday.
