UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone and Chancellor Anne Ponder were featured speakers at the recent NCAA Convention in Dallas.

They were both guest speakers at the 2012 NCAA Pathway Program. The Pathway Program helps enhance skills of women and ethnic minorities who seek to become directors of athletics, through education, training and mentorship.  It provides program participants with an in-depth look into the NCAA governance structure.  The program also exposes participants to key stakeholders within the association.

Cone spoke about her pathway in becoming UNC Asheville's Director of Athletics in April of 2004. She detailed her coaching background, her move into administration, accepting the job at UNC Asheville, and working with Chancellor Ponder.

Chancellor Ponder discussed the importance of partnerships in her position. She spoke about the process of putting her Senior Staff in place.  The Chancellor explained how her team worked to create a partnership with athletics to create University Enterprises which helped built the Wilma M. Sherrill Health and Wellness Center, the founding of the Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission, completing NCAA Certification and leading within the Big South Conference. In addition, she talked about the challenges of women and minorities in leadership roles on college campuses and in athletics.

The night was a huge success, according to the NCAA.

"Chancellor Ponder and Janet Cone provided the 2012 NCAA Pathway Program graduating and incoming classes with examples of how their work styles, professional expectations and daily interaction at UNC, Asheville merge to produce a culture of excellence, transparency and collaboration throughout the university and between the leadership team on campus," stated Curtis Hollomon, Director of Leadership Development at the NCAA. "Chancellor Ponder and Janet's words, collaborative partnership and strong sense of trust resonated as a roadmap for all administrators on their journey to obtaining an executive leadership position in intercollegiate athletics.  We were honored that they took the time to share their experiences and advice."

Cone has agreed to mentor a Pathway participant for the next 12 months. She looks forward to being a mentor to a perhaps future Director of Athletics.

"The Pathway Program is an outstanding and important service for future administrators," stated Cone. "I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experience and help pave the way for them to become a director of athletics."
