UNC Asheville Athletics to Induct Two in Hall of Fame on Friday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The UNC Asheville Athletics Department will induct two former student-athletes into its Hall of Fame on Friday night at the Wilma M. Sherrill Center. The 2013 UNC Asheville Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony will be presented by TD Bank. 

 

Prior to the Hall of Fame ceremony, the Athletics Department will host a "Celebration of Champions" in the Sherrill Center concourse as the school will pay tribute to 11 memorable moments in Bulldog history. A representative of that moment along with the current coach and a student-athlete from that sport will be on the concourse.

 

The "Celebration of Champions" will last from 5:30-6:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The Hall of Fame ceremony is from 6:30-7:30 p.m. and is by invitation only.

 

Former women's basketball player Vicki Giffin and former men's soccer player Mike Roach will be enshrined.

 

Vicki Giffin was a four-year starter for the women's basketball team. She was the Big South Rookie of the Year in 1994. As a senior, Vicki was named Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Big South Player of the Year. She completed her career as the program's third all-time leading scorer with 1,701 career points. Vicki currently holds the single-season record for field goal accuracy, career record for free throws made and single-game record for steals. She was twice named UNC Asheville Female Athlete of the Year and was an Academic All-District selection for two years.

 

Mike Roach was a two-year starter for the UNC Asheville men's soccer team. He was a key player for the Bulldogs at the midfield position when Asheville won the 2001 Big South Conference regular-season title. Mike was the 2001 Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's soccer. He then became in 2001 the first Bulldog student-athlete in the NCAA Division I era to be named to the Academic All-America first team. In addition, Mike was the 2002 Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year along with being the 2001 and 2002 UNC Asheville Scholar Athlete of the Year.

1987 Women's Tennis Wins Big South Conference Championship

 

2007 Women's Basketball Wins Big South Championship and Advances to NCAA Tournament

 

1992 Volleyball Wins Big South Conference Championship and Compiles 32-6 Overall Record

 

2001 Men's Soccer Wins Big South Conference Regular-Season Championship

 

2006 Baseball Wins Big South Conference Championship and Advances to NCAA Tournament

 

Phil Latter Becomes First UNC Asheville Track and Field Distance Runner to Advance to NCAA Regional in 5000 Meters in 2003

 

Natalie Pearson Becomes First UNC Asheville Track and Field Athlete to Advance to NCAA Championship in 200 meters in 2010 & 2011
