ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball coach Frederico Santos has announced the addition of three players for the 2013 season. The three incoming freshmen are Shelby Erickson, Taylor Sauer and Madison Vaughn.

“We are very excited about the three young ladies we have coming into our program,” declared Santos. “All three come from winning high school and club programs. I believe each one of them could make an impact for us starting this fall.”

Erickson is a 6-1 outside hitter from William T. Dwyer HS in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. She played club ball for Ocean Breeze Volleyball in Boca Raton. Erickson didn’t play last year because of a knee injury.  She was a three-year starter at Dwyer and earned All-Conference honors all three seasons she played. Erickson was named to the All-County second team as a sophomore and junior. She was team MVP following her junior season.

“Shelby is a strong player and is very versatile offensively,” stated Santos. “She will add depth in all three positions in the front row.”

Sauer is a 6-1 outside hitter from nearby Enka HS. She enjoyed a spectacular career at Enka. In her senior year, Sauer set a North Carolina record for number of kills (602) and kills per match (21.5). She helped lead Enka to a 25-2 record as the Sugar Jets advanced to the third round of the state playoffs and a Mountain Athletic Conference title. Sauer was named as Asheville Citizen-Times Player of the Year in 2012 and was the MAC Player of the Year as a junior and senior. She was a four-year starter at Enka. Sauer has played for the Biltmore Volleyball Academy from 2008-2013.

“We’re very pleased to sign a local player the caliber of Taylor,” said Santos. “She had an incredible senior year, and we’re glad she decided to stay home and play at UNC Asheville. We’re looking for her to provide some depth for us as an outside hitter.”

Vaughn is a 6-3 middle hitter from Statesville. She played at North Iredell HS and for the I.C. Stars in club ball. While playing for North Iredell, Vaughn was a first team All-Conference and All-County performer her junior and senior seasons. She helped lead the school to two straight conference championships and a berth in the state championship game as a junior. While playing for the I.C. Stars, Vaughan has been named to four different Carolina Region All-Tournament teams.

“Madison is talented and versatile player from North Iredell HS,” commented Santos. “We will look to her for contributions right away. Her primary position is a middle blocker, but she can also play right side and outside hitter if needed.”
