CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s cross country team was picked to finish in sixth place, while the women’s squad was selected to finish in fifth place according to the Big South Conference preseason poll that was announced on Tuesday.  The poll is voted on by the league’s coaches.

The Flames, who are looking to win their ninth-straight Big South Cross Country men’s title, were a unanimous selection as they finished with 144 points from the panel.  High Point claimed the No. 2 spot in the poll with 131 points.  In third was Campbell with 111 points and VMI was fourth with 99 points.  At the No. 5 position was Coastal Carolina with 94 points, ahead of UNC Asheville’s 85 points.  Winthrop’s 83 points was good for No. 7 and Radford claimed the No. 8 spot with 64 points.  Longwood finished ninth in the voting with 40 points, while Gardner-Webb took No. 10 with 39 points.  Charleston Southern recorded 33 points to land No. 11 and Presbyterian College rounded out the men’s voting with 13 points.

Coming off their Big South Women’s Cross Country Championship in 2012, the Lady Flames collected four first-place votes and 134 points.  High Point found itself at No. 2 with four top bids and 130 points.  Coastal Carolina was selected third with four first-place votes and 128 points, followed by Winthrop with 102 points.  Campbell and UNC Asheville finished in a tie for fifth with 85 points and at No. 7 was VMI with 78 points.  Radford notched 65 point to come in at the No. 8 position, while Charleston Southern earned 52 points to take the No. 9 slot.  Gardner-Webb notched 37 points at the No. 10 slot and Longwood finished at No. 11 with 26 points.  Presbyterian College rounded out the women’s voting with 14 points.

Asheville finished in fifth place last season on both the men’s and women’s side. Head Coach Jesse Norman hopes the Bulldogs can finish a little higher in 2013.

“I’m not surprised where we were picked,” commented Norman. “We hope to do a little better than that when the conference championship meet occurs in November.

“I’m really pleased at how our teams have been training since we got back,” added Norman. “Both teams worked hard in the summer and have really posted some great times in our preseason workouts. We’re anxious to get the season started.”

The Bulldogs won’t have to wait long. Both teams are scheduled to compete in the Catamount Classic at Western Carolina on Friday starting at 6 p.m.
