ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The unbeaten UNC Asheville volleyball team plays its first home match Tuesday night when the Bulldogs entertain North Carolina Central at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Tuesday match’s can be seen for free on the Big South Digital Network under the multimedia tag at uncabulldogs.com.

Asheville (3-0) opened the season in grand style with three wins and winning the Western Carolina Invitational in Cullowhee this past weekend. The Bulldogs knocked off Wright State 3-1 on Friday, upset Boston College of the ACC 3-2 on Saturday and then downed the Catamounts 3-0 in the finale. Senior middle blocker Anna Moore was named tournament MVP, while senior blocker Meredith Foster earned a spot on the All-Tournament team.

The 3-0 start is the best for the Bulldogs since the 1995 season. Asheville seemed to improve with each match and now look forward to playing its first home match of the season.

“We still have plenty of work to do but it was nice to open up the season with three wins,” stated Bulldog coach Frederico Santos. “Our team faced three tough opponents and found ways to win all three matches. We improved as the weekend went on and that always encouraging.”

North Carolina Central is 0-3 on the season after losing three matches in a tournament the Eagles hosted this weekend.

“North Carolina Central played three very tough opponents this weekend and battled them all pretty good,” explained Santos. “They were a point or two away from winning sets and then winning matches. We’ll need to play well Tuesday night to have a chance at winning.”

After Tuesday’s match, the Bulldogs play their next 10 matches away from Justice Center as they’ll play in tournaments at Chattanooga (Sept. 6-7), UNC Wilmington (Sept. 13-14) and College of Charleston (Sept. 20-21).

BULLDOG NOTES

UNC Asheville’s tournament title is its first since the 2009 season when the Bulldogs captured the USC Upstate Invitational.

The Bulldogs defeated Boston College of the ACC on Saturday. That’s the second ACC team that Asheville has defeated. The Bulldogs knocked off N.C. State in 2008 and 2009.

Asheville’s win over Boston College came in five sets. The Bulldogs have won six straight five-set matches dating back to last season.

The Bulldogs were just 1-10 in neutral matches last year. This year, Asheville is already 2-0.

Asheville is 27-8 at Justice Center over the past four years.
