ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Justin Franz scored with just over five minutes left in regulation as Campbell remained unbeaten in the Big South Conference with a 1-0 victory over UNC Asheville Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

The Camels improved their overall record to 3-6-1 and but remained unbeaten in league play at 3-0-1. Asheville fell to 4-9-0 and 1-4-0 in the Big South. Three of the Bulldogs four league losses have been by late goals in regulation or overtime.

Asheville goalkeeper Dan Jackson was spectacular in goal for the Bulldogs as he made 12 saves. Campbell out-shot the Blue & White 29-13.

“We had a hard time stopping Campbell’s midfield attack today. They’re a very good team,” stated Bulldog coach Matt Kern. “We battled hard, but Campbell was very tough to stop throughout the day.”

Jackson and the Bulldogs had kept Campbell off the scoreboard and it looked like the match might be headed to overtime.

But the Camels had possession and Tunji Osifeson lofted a perfect pass to Franz in the goal area. His shot hit the cross bar and just snuck over the goal-line to give the visitors a 1-0 lead at 84:47. Cesar Gonzalez was also credited with an assist on the play.

The Bulldogs dominated the next two minutes and fired five of their seven shots of the period. Emil Gonsalvez and Kenneth Lingerfelt had shots off direct kicks that forced Campbell goalkeeper Ethan Hall to make saves.

Hall made seven saves on the day to earn his second shutout of the season. Franz took 12 of Campbell’s 29 shots.

Lingerfelt took four of the Bulldogs 13 shots. He hit the goal-post on a corner kick midway through the first half.
