ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Catrina Green scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds helping lead Gardner-Webb to a 53-47 victory over UNC Asheville on Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference women’s basketball action.
With the victory the Runnin’ Bulldogs improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in Big South play while Asheville drops to 4-8 with a 1-2 mark in the league. The loss was also the fifth in a row for the Bulldogs.
Ja’Da Brayboy led all Asheville players with 12 points while Shonese Jones added 11 to the Bulldogs’ total. Leah Wormack pulled down a team-best eight boards to go along with seven points from the redshirt-sophomore forward.
Jasmine Dale and Lana Doran each posted nine points for Gardner-Webb, with Candace Brown and Doreen Richardson dishing out five assists apiece. Green also posted three blocks and two steals to go along with her double-double.
Gardner-Webb scored the first nine points of the game before the Bulldogs scored the next nine to tie the game at 9-9.
However, the Runnin’ Bulldogs outscored Asheville 21-6 the rest of the half to take a 30-15 halftime lead. Green scored all eight of her first-half points in the final nine minutes of the half to help the visitors take a 15-point halftime lead.
Asheville shot just .207 (6-of-29) from the field in the opening half, while GWU shot .382 (13-of-34) from the floor.
The Bulldogs came storming back in the second half, starting the frame on a 19-3 run to take a 34-33 lead with 11:19 to play on a Brayboy fastbreak layup. The two teams would trade the lead back and forth over the next 10 minutes of the contest before GWU was able to build a slim lead.
Clinging to a 48-45 lead with 26 seconds left, GWU’s Doran buried a 3-pointer from the top of the key to give the Runnin’ Bulldogs a six-point advantage. Asheville’s Brittany Gwyn cut the lead to four with 18 seconds left, but the Bulldogs could not close the game on the Runnin’ Bulldogs, eventually falling 53-47.
UNC Asheville is back at home Monday night when the Bulldogs host Presbyterian College at Kimmel Arena starting at 7 p.m. Gardner-Webb hosts Radford Thursday night at 7 p.m.
