Senior center D.J. Cunningham from the men’s basketball team is this week’s recipient of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Athlete of the Week at UNC Asheville.
Each week the school selects a BCBSNC Athlete of the Week upon their performance from the previous week's action.
D.J. enjoyed a tremendous Big South Conference Tournament for the Bulldogs. He scored 14 points and tied a tournament record with 19 rebounds in Asheville’s 96-87 quarterfinal win over Radford Friday afternoon. The 19 rebounds are the most rebounds for any Bulldog player in the school’s Division I era.
The next day against Winthrop in the semifinals, D.J. scored 21 points, collected 11 rebounds and had four blocked shots in an 80-79 loss to the Eagles.
For his work in the tournament, he was named to the Big South All-Tournament team on Sunday after Coastal Carolina downed Winthrop for the title.
His scoring outburst in the tournament gave him exactly 1,000 career points. He becomes the 30th player in school history to reach 1,000 points. In addition, Cunningham will leave Asheville as the school’s fourth all-time leader in rebounds with 819 career rebounds. He is the school’s Division I leader. D.J. is also Asheville’s leader in blocked shots with 281 blocks.
