ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team will play its final home Big South Conference series of the season this weekend when the Bulldogs host Radford at Greenwood Field.
Action begins Friday at 6 p.m., followed by Saturday’s contest with a starting of 5 p.m. Sunday’s finale will have a matinee start of 1 p.m. Saturday’s game will be broadcast on the Big South Digital Network under the multimedia tag at uncabulldogs.com.
The Bulldogs (13-33, 4-16 BSC) split a pair of mid-week road games. Asheville stunned SEC foe Tennessee on Tuesday night in Knoxville, 7-5 before falling last night at Davidson, 10-3.
Tom Smith’s club will have its hands full with a tough Radford (27-19, 12-9 BSC) squad invading Greenwood Field. The Highlanders are trying to finish in second place in the Big South’s North Division and just won a three-game series last weekend at High Point with wins in the second and third games.
Radford has been tough on the Bulldogs over the years as Asheville has not posted a win over the Highlanders since the 2008 season. RU has swept the last four three-game sets and will bring a 12-game winning streak over the Dogs on Friday. The teams did not play last season. Highlander head coach Joe Raccuia has an 18-3 record against the Bulldogs as a coach and player. He is 13-2 vs. the Dogs as a coach and 5-1 as a player. Raccuia has never lost a game in Asheville as a player or coach as he’ll enter Friday’s game with a 9-0 record in the Land of the Sky.
“Radford has had our number over the last few years and hopefully we can break through this weekend,” stated Smith. “Our guys are still competing, hustling and playing as hard as can be. We want to send our seniors out as winners this weekend.”
Saturday will be Senior Day as the Bulldogs will honor their eight seniors prior to the first pitch. The eight seniors are Brian Connolly, Robert McIntosh, Eli Miller, Scott Robinson, Dean Roland, Ethan Steible, Phillip Treadway and Sam Turner.
“We appreciate the great job those eight seniors have done for our program,” declared Smith. “These guys have worked very hard and given a lot for UNC Asheville baseball.”
Freshman outfielder Tanner Bush continues to lead the Bulldogs in hitting with a .321 average. Senior outfielder Phillip Treadway has a .291 mark and tops the club in RBIs with 22.
The Bulldogs are scheduled to start freshman right-hander Joe Zayatz (2-6, 4.21 ERA), sophomore right-hander Corey Randall (2-5, 3.09 ERA) and senior right-hander Dean Roland (2-4, 5.91 ERA) for this weekend’s series.
UNC Asheville is 4-16 in Big South Conference games. In 11 of those losses, the Bulldogs have been tied or led in the seventh inning and beyond. Two weeks ago at #22 Liberty, the Dogs led in the eighth and ninth innings but fell in both contests.
Corey Randall has started three BSC games this year and gone 1-3 with two complete games. Overall, Randall tops the club in strikeouts with 55 in 58.1 innings of work.
Freshman Joe Zayatz leads the team in innings pitched with 62.0.
Tommy Houmard has reached base in 13 straight games.
Phillip Treadway has driven in nine runs over the last eight games.
The Bulldogs are third in the Big South in doubles with 79.
Scott Robinson in sixth in the Big South in saves with five.
Nick Schavone and Scott Robinson are tied for fifth in the Big South in appearances with 23.
