BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – UNC Asheville junior libero Rachel Wells was named to the 2012 Big South All-Tournament Team for her efforts in the Bulldogs’ two matches at the event, it was announced Sunday by the Big South Conference.
The Statesville, N.C., native recorded 29 digs in Asheville’s 3-1 upset victory over the No. 3 seed High Point in the quarterfinals, before posting a team-best 15 digs against No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina in the Bulldogs’ 3-1 setback in the semifinals.
"Rachel Wells was playing at another level during conference tournament on defense, and was a very consistent performer for us," said Asheville head coach Frederico Santos.
She also posted three service aces in each match. For the week she tallied 44 digs, six aces, one kill and one assist.
Wells finished the season with 427 digs, leading all Bulldogs and finishing eighth in the conference. She posted 20 or more digs in five matches, including a career-best 35 digs against Charleston Southern on Oct. 19.
The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 12-20 overall, and a mark of 7-7 in the Big South, earning the No. 6 seed in the Big South Tournament that took place this past week at Gardner-Webb University.
