CULLOWHEE, N.C. – In their first match of the 2013 season the UNC Asheville volleyball team earned a 3-1 decision over Wright State at the Western Carolina Invitational, winning 18-25, 25-19, 29-27, 25-9 on Friday evening.

Sophomore outside hitter Christine Lakatos led the way for the Bulldogs with 16 kills, while Anna Moore (13) and Meredith Foster (10) combined for 23 kills from the middle blocker position. Setter Katie Davis tallied 43 assists while libero Rachel Wells collected 23 digs in the contest.

Foster was strong at the net defensively as well, collecting six blocks in the match.

With the win the Bulldogs improve to 1-0 while the Raiders fall to 0-2.

WSU was led offensively by Heidi Splinter, who posted a match-high 20 kills in the contest. Emily Meng recorded 44 assists from the setter position, with Miranda Puthoff posting a team-best 18 digs for the Raiders.

The Bulldogs will play two matches tomorrow as they finish out the 2013 WCU Invitational, taking on Boston College at 2:30 p.m. before facing of against the Catamounts in the finale of the tournament at 7:30 p.m. Asheville won a thrilling 3-2 victory over WCU at Justice Center on Sept. 4 of last season.
