ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Tyler Chadwick drove in five runs as Coastal Carolina clinched its weekend series with UNC Asheville by defeating the Bulldogs, 9-4 Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The Chanticleers (14-18, 6-5 BSC) won Friday’s game 9-7 and will go for the three-game Big South Conference sweep on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Asheville (9-22, 3-8 BSC) was led at the plate by freshman center-fielder Tanner Bush with three hits and two RBI’s. Freshman shortstop Derek Smith drove in two runs for the Blue & White.
Chadwick drove in his runs late in the game to help erase an Asheville lead. His two-run single put the Chants in front 4-3. His three-run double in the eighth helped seal the victory.
CCU trailed 3-2 entering the top of the seventh inning before scoring twice to take the lead for good. Asheville starter Joe Zayatz hit Reid Moman to lead off the inning. That ended the day for Zayatz. The freshman right-hander went six innings, allowing six hits, three runs, struck out two and walked one.
Brian Connolly (2-1) relieved Zayatz and gave up a hit to Connor Owings. With one out, Zach Remillard loaded the bases with an infield single.
Chadwick singled to right, plating two runs to give the Chanticleers the lead for good at 4-3. A wild pitch scored another run as CCU built the lead to 5-3.
The visitors put the game away in the eighth. Leading 6-3, Chadwick delivered a three-run double to left-field with two outs to put CCU in front 9-3.
The Bulldogs added a run in the bottom of the eighth on Smith’s run-scoring single.
Coastal Carolina opened the scoring in the second inning when Michael Paez hit a solo home run over the left-field wall for a 1-0 Chanticleer lead.
CCU added a run in the fifth. Moman led off with a single and went to third on Steven Whitaker double. With runners on second and third, Zach Remillard ground-out scored Moman for a 2-0 Chanticleer lead.
Asheville picked up its first run in the bottom of the frame. Kyle Towles reached on an infield single. He went to second on a wild pitch. Tanner Bush’s bunt single moved Towles to third.
Smith’s fielders choice scored Towles to cut the CCU lead to 2-1.
The Bulldogs took the lead in the sixth with some clutch two-out hitting. Hunter Bryant led the inning off with a walk. With one out, Joe Tietjen singled to left to put runners on first and second. Sam Turner’s walk loaded the day sand ended the day for Kerr.
Reliever Seth Lamando struck out Kyle Towles on a 3-2 pitch. But Bush delivered a two-run single to center-field that put the Bulldogs in front for the first time on the day, 3-2.
Lamando earned the win in field for CCU. He went 2.2 innings with three strikeouts to improve his record to 3-1.
