ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s and women’s cross country teams are in action on Saturday at VMI when both teams take part in the Big South Preview starting at 10 a.m.

Both Bulldog teams are coming in on a roll after each team claimed first place in last week’s Asheville Cross Country Carnival. Asheville’s men’s team won the crown with 44 points, while the women’s squad easily won with 25 points.

The men’s team had five runners finish in the top 11. The women’s team placed five runners in the top eight.

Andy Thornburg led the way for the men’s squad with a third-place finish over the 6K course with a time of 19:06. Senior Melanie Kulesz took second in the 5K race with a time of 18:32.

“I was really pleased with the way both teams ran last weekend,” stated head coach Jesse Norman. “We don’t have many home meets, and I think our kids were really excited about running in front of their friends and families.”

Norman thinks this will be a good meet to gauge where the Bulldogs are at this point of the season.

“We’ll know where we stand in the conference after this race,” declared Norman. “We’re off to a good start, but we’ll find out more after Saturday.

“I’m anxious to run this course and to see what we have to work on before the Big South Conference race here in Nov. (Nov. 2),” added Norman.
