End of the Year Diary

Hello folks, I know it’s been a very long time since my last entry. I got caught up in the whirlwind that has been this semester with academics and the season. This year was certainly a roller coaster ride. We started 1-6, went 14-4 during the middle stretch, and finished 1-6. The year provided many highlights that I, along with my teammates, will remember and cherish for the rest of our lives. Our time in Puerto Rico, the near upset of NC State, our victory against St. John’s, and the exhilarating win over VMI on national TV are only a few highlights that belong to this season.

In December, on a cold night in Queens, New York, we upset St. John’s of the Big East Conference. The victory was historic for Asheville, as it marked the school’s first victory over a Big East team. It was one of the most exciting games I have ever been in, and the feeling of victory afterwards was so perfectly sweet. It also marked the end of a successful road trip up north, where we ended 2-1, following a loss to Ohio State and a revenge win against Northeastern.

At one point during the year, we were 9-2 in conference play, and sat comfortably at the top of the Big South. The problem was, we became too comfortable, and began to take the smaller things that got us to that point for granted, such as offensive rebounding and help defense. We lost a few incredibly close games after that, where we failed to do the smaller things mentioned above that would’ve surely kept us victorious.

Our official end to the season against Longwood in Myrtle Beach was one of the most painful things I’ve ever experienced. As I’m writing about it, I feel anger fly through my veins. Our failure to be victorious is something that is rather confusing to me. It seemed like at the very end of the year, we were playing harder than ever. Never before had we put so much emphasis on defense, rebounding, and just overall effort, yet somehow we still couldn’t follow through. It’s so tough to put a finger on it, and I can’t think of one particular reason for our losing. Things just weren’t bouncing our way when we needed them most. Such end of the year results are learning experiences for young teams like we were, and we’ve (the team) already met up and promised each other that we will never let what happened this year occur again. The most painful experiences of adversity can also be the most motivating for success, and that is how we feel without a doubt. Since all the guys on the team are also great people, this will make our comeback that much easier. We are buuuurning with motivation right now, even though some of us are still banged up from the trials of the season.

I  also want to shout out the sixteen or so Bulldog fans that came all the way down to Myrtle Beach to support us for that ghastly last game. I appreciate every one of you guys’ support, and I know you will stick with us through the thick and thin!

I also want to thank the three seniors this year for what they’ve done to make our team as successful as possible. They all have bright futures awaiting them. Jeremy Atkinson was the most consistent force for us all season. His warrior attributes on the floor will be sorely missed next year. We should all learn something from how hard Jeremy plays. Jon Nwannunu provided a strong inside/outside presence in the frontcourt. The flopping of his dreads as he traverses the hardwood is a sight that will not be soon forgotten. Josh Seligson is a person I deem unforgettable. His presence, whether it be on the court, in the locker room, or on road trips, has always been a great one to have around. “Selly” will be missed.

We are already preparing for next year using our time to our advantage. The 2012-2013 was an interesting year with ups and downs. I can’t wait to see what we can do next year.

I’ll be working harder than ever this spring, summer, and fall to improve on everything. I had a good sophomore year, but it also made me realize all the work I need to do, and I can’t wait to get after it.

Motivation and Dedication,

Keith Hornsby
