ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s swim team will host four meets and participate in 12 events as the school announced its 2013-14 schedule on Tuesday.

Second-year coach Elizabeth Lykins is pleased with the schedule. Swimming returned to competition at UNC Asheville for the first time in more than 35 years last season. Lykins led the Bulldogs to a stunning ninth-place finish at the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Championships last February. Asheville beat out four other teams with just eight swimmers.

“Coming off our inaugural campaign, we are extremely excited for the season to begin. We expect the strides we made in 2012-13 to lead to bigger and better things in 2013-14,” stated Lykins.

The Bulldogs will have four meets at the Justice Center Pool this season, starting with an inter-squad meet on Sept. 21. Asheville had three meets last year at home and enjoyed standing-room only crowds for each event.

“We think we have created a unique venue for our home meets, and our team feeds off that energy and support,” added Lykins.

The Bulldogs open the season at the North Carolina Invitational in Greensboro on Oct. 4-5 before traveling to Campbell (Oct. 12) the following weekend for a tri-meet with the Camels and North Carolina A&T.

Asheville journeys to Marshall on Oct. 26 for a first-time meeting with the Thundering Herd. A tri-meet is scheduled for Nov. 2 at Davidson with VMI participating.

The Bulldogs first regular-season home meet comes on Nov. 8 when league foe Radford comes to Asheville. Lykins’ squad participates next in the Highlander Invitational (Nov. 21-23) at Radford right before Thanksgiving.

Asheville is at North Florida on Dec. 15 for its lone December meet. The Blue & White return to competition in 2014 when the Bulldogs travel to Lenoir-Rhyne on Jan. 4.

Asheville will stay at home the rest of January. The Bulldogs host league rival Georgia Southern on Jan. 11 before entertaining Brenau University on Jan. 31. The match with Brenau will be Senior Day as the school honors its seniors prior to the match.

Lykins’ team finishes the season with a meet at North Carolina A&T on Feb. 7. The Bulldogs will then compete in the CCSA Championships Feb. 19-22.

“The 2013-14 schedule will challenge this young team and have us prepared for conference championships in February,” admitted Lykins. “We are excited to resume training in less than two weeks with our first competition only six weeks following the start of school.”
