ASHEVILLE, N.C. –Jessica Ryan scored the game’s only goal midway through the second half as Charlotte edged short-handed UNC Asheville 1-0 in women’s soccer exhibition action Saturday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs played the match without two of their top scorers from last year in junior forward Kaitlyn Eckert and sophomore Shenny Lenhart. Both missed the game due to injuries.
Charlotte controlled most of the match with a 25-6 advantage in shots, but Asheville head coach Michelle Demko was pleased overall with her team’s play.
“Charlotte beat us pretty handily last year in our exhibition match. Today I thought we competed with them with only 60 percent of our team playing,” stated Demko. “This is a good starting point for our club, and we’ll only get better.”
The Bulldogs had two goalkeepers in the match. Junior Heather Muller played the first half and kept the 49ers off the scoreboard with five saves. Sophomore transfer Suzie Zigante played the second half and made seven saves.
It was off a Zigante save that gave Charlotte the only goal of the match. Kaitlyn Walker fired a shot that Zigante blocked. The ball deflected to Ryan who knocked in the rebound to give the 49ers the only goal of the game at 65:04
Paige Trent had two shots for Asheville on offense.
The 49ers out-shot the Bulldogs 9-5 in the first half but really dominated the second half with a 16-1 advantage.
UNC Asheville opens the 2013 season at home this Friday afternoon when the Bulldogs host Eastern Kentucky at Greenwood Field starting at 5 p.m.
