ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men’s basketball team plays its final game before the holidays on Friday night when the Bulldogs host Virginia Intermont at Kimmel Arena starting at 7 p.m.

Asheville (3-7) looks for its third straight win on Friday after winning at USC Upstate on Sunday, 73-63. Freshman guard Andrew Rowsey scored 19 points, while fellow rookie guard David Robertson added a career-high 18 points for the Bulldogs. Jaron Lane contributed 14 points, including a 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line.


“Sunday was a great win for our guys,” explained first-year coach Nick McDevitt. “We were focused and played hard for 40 minutes to beat a very good team on the road. We’ll need to keep playing like that throughout the year.”


The Bulldogs host the Cobras (3-10) for just the second time ever. Asheville downed Virginia Intermont 116-58 in the 2010-11 season at Justice Center. The Cobras played at Big South foe Longwood on Tuesday before falling, 80-61.


“Virginia Intermont is much improved from when we played them a few years ago,” commented McDevitt. “They gave Longwood a good game on Tuesday, and we expect a great effort from them Friday night.”


Rowsey continues to lead the Bulldogs in scoring and has a 15.1 average. Lane has scored in double figures in six consecutive games and is averaging 12.7 points per game. Senior center D.J. Cunningham has recovered from a knee injury to play the past two contests. He has an 11.4 scoring average and tops the club in rebounding with an 8.3 mark.


Senior forward Joshua Hart leads the VI attack as he’s averaging 25 points per game. He scored 19 points at Longwood Tuesday night.




UNC Asheville is 27-6 at Kimmel Arena.


The Bulldogs have won 23 straight home games against non-Division I opponents.


Friday’s game starts a four-game homestand for the Bulldogs as they’ll face UNC Wilmington (Dec. 28), Montreat (Dec. 31) and Ohio University (Jan. 4).


Asheville is 3-0 when it out-rebounds its opponents.


The Bulldogs have been above 70 percent from the free throw line in seven of its 10 games this season. Asheville is 31-of-37 (.838) from the line in the last two games.


Andrew Rowsey has scored in double figures in nine of 10 games this year.


The Bulldogs have used five different starting line-ups this season.


Senior center D.J. Cunningham grabbed his 600th career rebound against Bluefield last week. He now has 611 career rebounds and is tied for ninth place on the school’s all-time list with Paul Allen. He needs two rebounds to move past Frank Rhyne (612) into eighth place.  Cunningham is also approaching 200 career blocked shots. He has 197 blocked shots and is in second place on the school’s all-time list.


The Bulldogs are 7-2 in the month of December over the past two seasons.


Sam Hughes is shooting .500 (10-of-20) from the three-point line.


David Robertson was named Big South Freshman of the Week on Monday after scoring 18 points against USC Upstate last Sunday.
