ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team suffered a 64-52 setback to Big South Conference foe Radford on Thursday evening at Kimmel Arena, as the Highlanders avenged an early season loss to the Bulldogs with the 12-point victory.
With the setback the Bulldogs fall to 9-15 on the season with a 6-9 mark in Big South play while the Highlanders improve to 7-18 and 5-11 in the league. It was also the third win in a row for RU while Asheville has now dropped its fourth consecutive contest.
Junior guard Shonese Jones led the way for the Bulldogs with 14 point with Tianna Knuckles adding 10 to the Bulldogs’ tally. Ja’Da Brayboy recorded four steals with Brittany Gwyn and Chatori Major posting three each as the Blue & White forced 22 Radford turnovers.
Radford was led by Aisha Foy offensively, with Foy tallying 14 for the Highlanders. Breshara Gordon scored 11 while dishing out seven assists to help RU to the victory. As a team the Highlanders shot a blistering 47 percent in the contest while out-rebounding the Bulldogs 43-29.
The Highlanders also dominated the paint, outscoring Asheville 28-16 from close range.
RU built a 14-5 lead over the first 10 minutes of the contest before the Bulldogs cut the lead to five at 14-9 with 8:28 to go on a Jones jumper. However, the Highlanders would finish the frame on a 19-to-8 run capped off by a Gordon layup with 15 seconds left to take a 33-17 lead into the break.
The second half saw the Bulldogs battle back, chipping away at the RU lead to 51-41 with 6:34 remaining in the game. The deficit, however, was too much to overcome for the Blue & White as Radford held the Bulldogs’ comeback in check the rest of the way to eventually win 64-52. Asheville outscored RU in the second half 35-31.
Asheville hosts its annual Pink Game Saturday afternoon against Longwood. Doors will be open at Noon for a Women’s Expo and a shopping event with Asheville’s top retailers until 2 p.m. Buffalo Wild Wings will be donating 2000 wings for Saturday’s game and fans can get them starting at Noon. The Bulldogs face Longwood in a key Big South Conference battle at 2 p.m.
Right after the game, there will be a wine and cheese social and then a Fashion Show at around 4:45 p.m. that will feature UNC Asheville student-athletes and celebrities showing off the latest fashions. The day will end with an auction for a one-year lease of a Volkswagen Jetta with the bidding starting at one dollar. Tickets for this exciting event are just $25.
