BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Trailing 5-0 heading into the top of the eighth the UNC Asheville baseball team scored four runs in the frame, but could not complete the comeback as the Bulldogs fell to Western Kentucky 6-4 in game two of a three-game set.


With the setback the Bulldogs fall to 1-2 while the Hilltoppers improve to 4-2, with game three of the series slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.


Starter Ethan Steible was credited with the loss for Asheville, allowing four runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings and striking out two batters to fall to 0-1 on the season.


Kyle Towles and Eli Miller each tallied two hits, with Towles knocking in a pair of runs for the Blue & White. Catcher Sam Turner had a hit and a run batted in with Tommy Houmard and Kyle Carruthers drawing a pair of walks apiece.


WKU’s Cody Wofford and Scott Wilcox each posted two RBI in the contest, with Wilcox collecting four hits in the game. Centerfielder Trevor Lowe went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI to help the Hilltoppers to the win.


Hilltopper starter Austin Clay picked up the victory going the minimum, pitching five shutout innings and allowing only three hits. Ian Tompkins entered the game in the ninth and picked up his third save of the season and his second of weekend, striking out three batters while allowing a hit and a walk.


The Bulldogs will throw RHP Dean Roland in tomorrow’s contest while WKU will send RHP Jake Thompson to the hill.
