BOONE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team dropped a pair of games to Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-2 in game one and 7-2 in game two in a doubleheader at Smith Stadium on the campus of the Mountaineers.


With the victory ASU snapped a two-game win streak by the Bulldogs, who fall to 3-9 with the two setbacks. Appalachian improves to 3-11 with the wins.


Game one saw the Bulldogs strike first with a run in the top of the first, only to see the Mountaineers score nine runs over the bottom of the first, second and third innings to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Asheville scratched a run across the plate in the top of the seventh but could not score any further.


Asheville starter Corey Randall took the loss in the contest, allowing four runs on three hits in two innings to fall to 0-2. ASU’s Jamie Nunn improved to 1-3 by allowing only two runs on three hits in 6.1 innings, striking out five Bulldogs in the process.


In game two the Blue & White found themselves down 4-0 after the first two innings, before the Mountaineers added three more in the bottom of the fourth. Asheville got a pair of runs in the top of the seventh but once again could not complete the comeback to fall by the final of 7-2.


Senior hurler Dean Roland (1-2) was credited with the loss for the Bulldogs, giving up seven runs (six earned) in 3.1 innings. App’s Tyler Moore tossed a complete game, giving up two runs on eight hits to improve to 2-2 on the year.


The two teams will close out the three game series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
