HIGH POINT, N.C.  - The No. 8 seeded UNC Asheville women's basketball team will take on No.1 seed Liberty on Friday at noon in the opening round of the 2012 Advance Auto Parts Big South Championship at the Millis Center on the campus of High Point University.

The game will be televised live on the Big South Network with a live audio stream available at UNCABulldogs.com.

The Bulldogs enter Friday's contest with an overall record of 7-22 and a 3-15 mark in the Big South. Liberty finished the regular season with a mark of 21-8 while going 16-2 in conference games.

Liberty leads the all-time series record against UNC Asheville, 44-7. The Flames are also 5-0 against the Bulldogs in Big South Tournament Games.  The two teams have not met in the tournament since March 12, 2005, an 88-41 win for Liberty.

In the last meeting between the two Liberty went on a 28-0 run that spanned the end of the first half and the start of the second half to break open a close game as the Big South Conference regular-season champion Lady Flames downed UNC Asheville 84-53 at the Vines Center on Feb. 27. The Bulldogs were led by Lindsey Thompson with a team-high 15 points, while freshman guard Tacey Trammell chipped in 13 and Shonese Jones had 12 markers. Devon Brown and LaKendra Washington led Liberty with 15 points each. Regan Miller added 14 points.

In Asheville's last game Erin Reynolds scored 21 points and Tayler Tremblay added 14 points with six assists as High Point defeated UNC Asheville 74-56 in the Big South Conference final regular season game of the year Monday night at Kimmel Arena. Shonese Jones led the Bulldogs with a game-high 25 points. Asheville finished the regular season with a 7-22 overall record and 3-15 worksheet. It was the Bulldogs' 11th straight loss.

Freshman guard Shonese Jones was named the 2011-12 Big South Conference's Freshman of the Year on Thursday evening, becoming the sixth Bulldog to earn the honor, and the first since Kyla Jones in 2007. Jones, a guard from Etowah, N.C., was tabbed the Big South's Freshman of the Week four times during the year and was selected as the League's Player of the Week on Dec. 20.  She has recorded nine games with at least 20 points and has scored 30-or-more points on two occasions.  She finished with at least 20 points in three straight games on the year from Dec. 17-21.  She also posted 11 rebounds against Coastal Carolina on Jan. 7.  Jones has led her squad in scoring 14 times during the year and is the League's top-rated freshman scorer with 15.4 points per game. She is also the first freshman to lead the Bulldogs in scoring since Kristal Hood in the 2002-03 season.

Senior guard Lindsey Thompson reached the 1,000-point plateau against Winthrop on Feb. 13, reaching the mark on a 3-pointer in the first half. She is the 15th player in school history to hit the mark and is the third in two years. Kendall Shepard and Lindsey Montgomery reach 1,000 career points last season. Thompson now sits at 1,067 for her career.

Both Shonese Jones and Leah Wormack were named to the Big South's All-Freshman squad this year. Jones was named the Freshman of the week four times this year with Wormack earning the honor on three occasions.
