BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - In the first Big South Conference match of the year for both squads, the UNC Asheville volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to league foe Gardner-Webb on Friday evening at Paul Porter Arena, falling 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14.
"In the first three sets, we held our composure really well," said Asheville head coach Frederico Santos. "Unfortunately in the fourth set, we made a couple of mistakes at critical times that gave Gardner-Webb what they needed to get the edge."
With the setback, the Bulldogs fall to 4-13 on the year, with a 0-1 mark in conference play, while GWU improves to 5-12 overall and 1-0 in the Big South.
Junior middle blocker Anna Moore led the Blue & White in kills, registering 11 on the evening. Meredith Foster and Christine Lakatos each tallied nine kills, with Holly Shelton chipping in seven to the Bulldogs' total.
Freshman setter Katie Davis recorded 36 assists directing the Asheville offense, with Shelton leading the Bulldogs defensively with 16 digs. Moore also posted three service aces in the match.
GWU's Emily Holte led all players with 14 kills, while hitting for a .385 clip in the four-set match. Erin Anderson tallied 10 kills for the Runnin' Bulldogs, with Amanda Murphy recording eight kills.
Heather Feldman led the Runnin' Bulldogs offense in assists with 50, while also registering a team-high 14 digs on defense. GWU also posted 10 service aces in the match, with Holte recording three.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 28, when host league foe Radford at Justice Center beginning at 7 p.m. Asheville will then take on Big South opponent Liberty on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 6 p.m. at Justice Center.
