ASHEVILLE, N.C. Jon Ole Reinhardsen scored off a corner kick in the 78th minute to give Gardner-Webb a 1-0 Big South Conference victory over homestanding UNC Asheville Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The victory was the third straight (3-8-1, 2-1-1) for the Runnin' Bulldogs, while the Bulldogs (1-12-0, 0-6-0 BSC) lost for the 12th straight time.
"I am disappointed for our guys in the result today, as I thought we played well enough at times to get something out of the game," stated Asheville coach Matt Kern. "However, we have to give full credit to Gardner Webb as they found a way to score, but I will continue to work with guys to be a little tougher in the penalty box. I need to continue to work with the group on defending corners."
The game was evenly matched though Gardner-Webb held a slight edge in shots at 16-9. The Runnin' Bulldogs held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Asheville had been getting the run off play before the visitors scored the winner. Off a corner kick, Marius Hammersmark sent a pass into the box that Reinhardsen was able to head into the back of the goal for the only score of the match at 78:16.
