Gardner-Webb Holds Off UNC Asheville in Four Sets

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Gardner-Webb had three players in double figures in kills as the Runnin' Bulldogs outlasted UNC Asheville 3-1 in Big South Conference volleyball action Friday night at Justice Center.

 

GWU (8-15, 3-3 BSC) was led by Erin Anderson and Tyler Cockrell with 13 kills each. Emily Holtee contributed 10 kills and four blocks for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Setter Heather Feldman finished with 18 digs and 49 assists. Libero Anna Pashkova added 17 digs.

 

The Bulldogs (6-16, 2-4 BSC) were led by a game-high 16 kills from Meredith Foster. Anna Moore and Holly Shelton added nine kills each. Rachel Well had a match-high 20 digs. Alex Stewart chipped in 11.

 

"All the credit goes to Gardner-Webb. They played very well tonight and got key points when they had to get them," commented Asheville coach Frederico Santos. "We have to play better than we did tonight."

 

Gardner-Webb led for most of the first set as Asheville committed 13 hitting errors and hit -.023. The Runnin' Bulldogs took the first set 25-21.

 

The key set of the match was the second set. The Bulldogs went on a late run, led by kills from Moore and Shelton to grab a 23-19 lead. Asheville seemed poised to tie the match but the Runnin' Bulldogs took advantage of some hitting errors and got some key kills from Cockrell to score six straight points and grab a 2-0 lead with a 25-23 second set win.

 

The Bulldogs were able to take the lead early in the third set and never trailed as they won 25-21. Moore had three kills late in the set to help Asheville build its lead.

 

In the fourth set, there were 10 ties and four lead changes.  The Bulldogs snuck ahead on a Foster kill to lead 18-17. But Gardner-Webb got its blocking going and scored four straight points to lead 21-18. Tyra Montour came off the bench and had all three of her blocks in the final set, including two in the 4-0 run.

 

The visitors surged ahead 24-19 before Asheville made one more push behind two kills from Foster to close to 24-21. Holte would end the match with a kill, and Gardner-Webb's first victory at Justice Center since the 2006 season.  

 

UNC Asheville stays at home and will host Big South foe Charleston Southern next Friday (Oct. 19) at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m. Gardner-Webb returns home to host Coastal Carolina next Friday, also at 7 p.m.
