CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville outside hitter Holly Shelton and libero Rachel Wells were honored by the Big South Conference today for their play this past weekend as the Bulldogs picked up two league victories over Presbyterian College and Winthrop.
Shelton, a senior from Brevard, was named Choice Hotels Big South Volleyball Player of the Week, while Wells, a junior from Statesville, was named Defensive Player of the Week.
Shelton played a big role in UNC Asheville's 2-0 week. She totaled 33 kills with a .275 percentage and averaged 4.12 kills per set. She also tallied 17 digs and five blocks. In the 3-2 win against Presbyterian, she recorded 18 kills, 13 digs and three blocks. In Shelton's final home match as a Bulldog, she recorded another 15 kills, four digs and two blocks against Winthrop.
Wells anchored UNC Asheville's back row last week. The junior posted 47 digs and averaged 5.88 digs per set. In the match against Presbyterian, she recorded 33 digs. Wells then tallied another 14 digs in the 3-0 win against Winthrop. This is Wells' second Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
