RICHMOND, Ky. – Playing in its first road game of the season, the UNC Asheville women’s basketball team dropped a 67-47 decision to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Paul S. McBrayer Arena. The Lady Colonels used a 25-5 run over the first 10 minutes of the game to pull away from the Blue & White.

Three different Lady Colonels scored in double figures, with Brittany Coles leading the game with 15 points. Jade Barber scored 12 and Alex Jones scored 10 in helping lead EKU to a 3-0 start on the season.

“We’ve got to do a better job of executing on offense and defense,” said UNC Asheville head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “Today we face crunch time early and didn’t respond quickly enough to really make a game of it. I’m pleased with our effort down the stretch, but we knew how athletic EKU was and that we were going to have a fight on our hands. We just need to do the little things better.”
Shonese Jones and Kelli Riles led the Bulldogs with 10 points each. Riles pulled down seven rebounds.

The Bulldogs fall to 0-3 with the setback, and are currently on a 14-game losing streak dating back to last season. Asheville has also lost its last 16 road contests with its last road win coming against Winthrop on Feb. 28, 2011.

The Lady Colonels exploded for 41 points in the first half, beginning the game on a 22-3 run. Asheville finally got on the board at the 15:41 mark on a Jones 3-pointer. After that point the two teams traded buckets back and forth, with EKU outscoring the Bulldogs 19-16 over the final 15 minutes of the half.

Jones led the Bulldogs in scoring in the first half with five points.

The Bulldogs outscored the Lady Colonels 28-26 in the second half, but never got closer than 20 points to reaching EKU.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday evening, when they welcome Montreat College to Kimmel Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and will be video-streamed at uncabulldogs.com.
