LYNCHBURG, Va. - The UNC Asheville women's basketball team will try and get its first Big South Conference win on Saturday when they visit defending league champion Liberty starting at 3 p.m.

 

Saturday's contest will be broadcast locally on WPEK Radio (880-AM) with the pre-game show beginning at 2:45 p.m. The game can be seen via video-streaming at www.uncabulldogs.com under the multimedia tag.

 

Asheville competed and battled at Radford Thursday night before falling,  66-54. The Bulldogs made 29 turnovers in the loss that led to 28 Highlander points. A bright spot was the play of senior forward Kelli Riles as she enjoyed her fifth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Her 10 rebounds allowed her to move into second place on the school's career rebounding list with 899. She is now Asheville's Division I all-time leader in rebounds. Sheila Ford is the school's leader with 2,200 rebounds.

 

The Bulldogs (2-12, 0-3 BSC) have a tough task facing Liberty. The Lady Flames are 10-5 on the season and 2-1 in league play. They're coming off a 51-49 loss to Presbyterian College at home Thursday.

 

Liberty has won the 11 games in the series, including three meetings last season. The Lady Flames won 78-56 at Kimmel Arena, 84-53 at the Vines Center and 71-50 in the Big South Tournament.

 

The Bulldogs are being led in scoring by sophomore guard Shonese Jones with a 14.9 average. She scored 19 points at Radford on Thursday and has scored in double figures in eight straight games.

 

Asheville returns home on Thursday to face Big South foe Winthrop at Kimmel Arena starting at 7 p.m.

 

BULLDOG NOTES

 

Kelli Riles is second in the Big South Conference in rebounding with a 10.5 per game average. Her 899 rebounds put her in seventh place on the Big South's career rebounding list.

 

Liberty leads the all-time series 45-7 and is 23-2 against the Bulldogs in Lynchburg. Asheville's last win came on Feb. 24, 2007 when the Bulldogs slipped past the Flames, 54-51 on Senior Night at the Vines Center.  The victory would help propel Asheville to win the Big South Conference championship two weeks later.

 

The Bulldogs have lost 21 straight road games and 15 BSC contests.

 

Grace Blaylock grabbed a career-high nine rebounds at Radford Thursday night.

 

Sophomore guard Brittany Gwyn scored a season-high 11 points at Radford on Thursday.

 

Asheville head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick played against Liberty twice in her career at Wake Forest and went 1-1 against the Lady Flames.
