ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Liberty rallied from losing the doubles points and captured four singles match, two in three sets, as the Lady Flames downed UNC Asheville 4-3 in Big South Conference women's tennis action at the ARC Thursday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-4, 0-1 BSC) captured the doubles points in exciting fashion. Asheville won at #1 flight behind the play of Zoe Hamel and Erickia Rivero, 8-4 before Liberty got a win at #2 flight from Jesse Boda and Brittany Yang, 8-4. The point would come down to the #3 flight and Asheville won the final two games to win the match and point, 8-6. Sophomore Amryn Soldier and freshman Gillian Lewis earned the win for the Blue & White.
Liberty began to rally in singles. Cameron Richrad of LU defeated Zoe Hamel at #1 flight, 6-2, 6-3 and then Rebekah Jenkins from Liberty won at #2 over Emily McNall, 6-1, 6-0.
Rivero came back for the Bulldogs winning at #3 over Yang, 6-4, 6-3.
Liberty was able to win the match with two three-set wins at #4 and #5. Nicola Wellmen rallied past Soldier, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1 at #4. Valerie Thong then edged Christina Boissevain, 6-4, 1-6-, 6-4 to get Liberty its fourth point.
Lewis won a three-set match for the Bulldogs at #6 as she downed Annisha Domenech, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Asheville is back in action on Saturday when the Bulldogs host North Carolina Central at the ARC starting at 11 a.m.
