Bulldogs Fall In Big South Opener To Longwood, 7-4

FARMVILLE, Va. – In the Big South Conference season opener for both squads, Longwood University used a five-run third inning to down UNC Asheville, 7-4, in baseball action at Bolding Stadium on Friday evening.

With the setback the Bulldogs fall to 7-12 on the season, with a 0-1 mark in league play. Longwood, playing in its first Big South Conference game in its history, improves to 9-8 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Freshman third baseman Justin Woods was 2-for-4 at the plate, with two runs batted in for the Bulldogs. Starting pitcher Dean Roland was credited with the loss, falling to 0-4 on the season. Roland allowed seven runs on nine hits, with two walks and eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings. 

Reliever Ethan Steible closed out the game for the Blue & White, giving up two hits in 2.1 innings of work.

First baseman Scott Burkett had two hits, including a three-run home run, and third baseman Alex Owens added a hit and two RBI, to lead Longwood offensively. 

Kyler Morgan (2-1) got the start and threw seven complete innings to pick up the victory for the Lancers, allowing three runs on six hits with two walks and five K’s.

The two teams will continue the series tomorrow, with first pitch set for 4 p.m. Brian Connolly is slated to start for the Bulldogs, while the Lancers will throw Brandon Vick.
