Campbell Rallies to Win Game 1, 12-8

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Campbell scored 10 runs after trailing 8-2 as the Camels defeated UNC Asheville 12-8 in the first game of a Big South Conference double-header at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon. The second game started at 3:45 p.m.

 

The Bulldogs (8-16, 1-4 BSC) were led at the plate by Ian Graham and Todd Joyner with three hits each. Eli Miller had a two-run double for Asheville.

 

The home team had an 8-2 lead after scoring twice in the fifth inning only to see Campbell tie the game with six runs in the sixth at 8-2. CU scored twice in the seventh and eighth to take the lead for good and cruise to its fourth straight win.

 

Michael Felton led the 29th-ranked Camels (20-3, 4-1 BSC) at the plate with two hits and four RBI. Ryan Thompson came on in relief and silenced the Asheville bats. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and no runs.

 

The comeback began in the sixth inning as the first two Camel hitters walked, ending the day for Asheville starter Lucas Clarke. Another walk loaded the bases with one out. Felton then had a two-run double down the right-field line to cut the lead to 8-4 and put runners on second and third.

 

Elijah Trail grounded out score another run to cut the lead to 8-5. David Olson followed with an RBI-single to narrow the gap to 8-6.

 

Nick Ray singled to left-field that scored one run to cut the lead to 8-7. An error in left-field plated the tying run at 8-8.

 

Campbell took the lead in the seventh. With one out, Ben McQuown doubled. He went to third on a bunt single by Brent Graham. Felton drove in the go-ahead run on a ground-out. Trail’s run-scoring single padded the lead to 10-8.

 

Graham provided more insurance in the eighth with a two-run, two-out single pushing the lead to 12-8.

 

Asheville opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. Joyner had a run-scoring double to plate the first run of the game. Phillip Treadway followed with a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. Treadway stole second and came around to score on Graham’s run-scoring single.

 

Campbell picked up two runs in the third on RBI-singles from Felton and Olson to cut the lead to 3-2.

 

Asheville came right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Miller’s clutch two-out, two-run double pushed the lead to 5-2. Joyner singled to right, scoring Miller for a 6-2 lead.

 

The Bulldogs scored two more runs in fifth on a botched double-play ball by Campbell to push the margin to 8-2
