ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team hosts USC Upstate this afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 4 p.m.
The Bulldogs (12-26) look for their first ever win over the Spartans (21-15) as Asheville has lost all four meetings to USC Upstate, including a 10-8 decision in Spartanburg back on March 20.
The men of Tom Smith will start Tommy Houmard (0-2, 7.15) on the hill today. Right-hander Ben Augenstien (0-2, 7.15 ERA) is on the hill for the Spartans.
Asheville is coming off a Big South Conference series loss at home to Presbyterian College. The Dogs fell to the Blue Hose, 5-4 on Friday and Sunday. Asheville, behind the pitching of Dean Roland, won Saturday’s tilt 4-2.
The Bulldogs are in the midst of an eight-game homestand. Asheville hosts Big South rival High Point at Greenwood Field this weekend starting Friday at 3 p.m.
“We had a chance to win all three games against Presbyterian this weekend but a mistake here or there on Friday and Sunday cost us,” stated Smith. “We’re close but we’ve just got to learn to win close games.”
Robert McIntosh leads Asheville in hitting with a .343 average, while senior catcher Ian Graham is next at .341.
Asheville has had at least 10 hits in eight of the last nine games.
The Bulldogs have lost four straight one-run games.
Tommy Houmard has an 11-game hitting streak entering today’s game. Justin Woods is right behind him with a nine-game streak. Houmard has reached base in 20 consecutive games.
Asheville is 7-10 at home this season.
The Bulldogs are 6-10 in one-run and two-run games this year.
Asheville is 11-3 when it out-hits its opponent but just 1-23 when it doesn’t.
The Bulldogs went 2-0 against Big East foes this year with wins over Georgetown and Pittsburgh.
