ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville baseball team fell to Big South Conference foe High Point on Saturday afternoon, as the Panthers rallied for six runs over the final two innings to earn an 8-5 victory over the Bulldogs in the first game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon.

 

With the victory the Panthers improve to 20-20 on the season, with a 7-6 mark in league play. Asheville drops to 13-27 and 2-11 in the Big South.

 

Eli Miller and Phillip Treadway each homered for the Blue & White, with Treadway going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Rightfielder Todd Joyner was 3-for-5 on the day, with a run scored.

 

Corey Randall got the start and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Billy Creighton (1-2) was credited with the loss in relief, allowing three runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.

 

HPU centerfielder Cody Manzella was 3-for-3 at the dish, driving in two RBI on the day. Catcher Josh Spano and pinch hitter Sean Wilson each drove in pair of runs, with Spano collecting two hits in the contest.

 

The Panthers’ John Maloney picked up the victory in relief, giving up one run on one hit in an inning of work. Sean Townsley picked up his first save of the season, retiring the final two Bulldog batters.

 

The two teams will play game two tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m., and will close out the series on Monday at 1 p.m.
