ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville pounded out 13 hits en route to an 8-7 victory over Wofford Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs (14-29) were led at the plate by Ian Graham, Todd Joyner and Tommy Houmard with three hits each. Graham drove in two runs and had a double. Junior catcher Sam Turner went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Asheville had to hold off a dramatic Terrier (16-27) comeback in the ninth inning. Wofford trailed 8-3 with one out but the Terriers scored four times over the next six batters to cut the Bulldogs lead to 8-7. The visitors had runners on second and third and appeared poised to rally for the lead. But Scott Robinson came on and got a big strikeout for the second out of the inning. He then induced a fly ball to left to end the threat and give the Bulldogs the win. Matthew Ramsey had a two-run double for Wofford along with run-scoring singles from Matthew Pelt and pinch-hitter Taylor Rozier.
Asheville opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. Turner delivered his first hit, a run-scoring single to left and that scored Bryant with the first run of the game. Ian Graham’s double to center-field scored Turner for a 2-0 Asheville advantage.
The Bulldogs pushed the lead to 3-1 in the third. Joyner singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hunter Bryant’s run-scoring single scored Joyner as Asheville regained its two-run lead.
Turner delivered again in the fourth. His run-producing double plated Phillip Treadway to push the lead to 4-1. Houmard’s RBI-single scored Turner to pad the margin to 5-1.
The Bulldogs got two unearned runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Turner sent a ground ball to third baseman Eric Brenk. Brenk’s throw was low and got by first-baseman Seth Neely for an error. The error scored two runs and put Asheville in front 7-1.
Graham provided some needed insurance in the seventh. Treadway led off with a double. After two outs, he stole third. Graham then singled to left, scoring Treadway for an 8-3 lead.
The win went to Asheville starter Lucas Clarke (2-3) who went 5.1 innings. He allowed just one run on six hits and struck out four.
UNC Asheville plays next on Friday when the Bulldogs begin a three-game Big South Conference series at Gardner-Webb starting at 6 p.m. Friday’s game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
