Volleyball Takes Down Boston College In Five Sets

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team outlasted Boston College on Saturday afternoon in a five-set thriller at the 2013 Western Carolina Invitational, as the Bulldogs picked up their second victory all time against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent.

 

The Bulldogs defeated N.C. State 3-2 in 2008 for their first ACC victory.

 

Asheville took the match 25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-12 to improve 2-0 on the young season. With the setback the Eagles fall to 2-2 on the year.

 

Sophomore outside hitter Christine Lakatos paced the Blue & White offensively with 13 kills, with middle blocker Anna Moore finishing just one behind with 12. The Bulldogs were also stingy at the net defensively, posting 12 kills in the match.

 

Rachel Wells led the team in digs with 17, with the Bulldogs posting 62 as a team. Asheville also tallied five service aces, with Wells accounting for three of them.

 

BC’s Katty Workman tallied a season-high 30 kills, with Amanda Yerke chipping in 14 for the Eagles. Boston College tallied 72 kills on 174 attacks for a .230 hitting percentage. The Eagles also recorded 11 blocks in the contest.

 

Asheville will finish out the 2013 WCU Invitational later this evening when the Bulldogs take on the host Catamounts in a match set for 7:30 p.m. The Blue & White won the only meeting between the two schools last season, earning a 3-2 decision at Justice Center.
