ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Sophomore midfielder Shenny Lenhart scored the only goal of the match one minute into overtime as UNC Asheville edged Mars Hill 1-0 in women’s college soccer action Wednesday afternoon.
The match was delayed 35 minutes late in regulation due to lightning in the Asheville area. The game resumed with 2:58 left in regulation.
Lenhart’s goal gave the Bulldogs (3-3-0) their third win of the year and kept them perfect on the season at home at 3-0-0.
Mars Hill fell to 0-1-1 on the young season.
Asheville controlled play for most of the match but could not put a ball into the back of the net. The home team out-shot the Lions 22-7.
Finally, Lehnart took over quickly in overtime. She stole an errant Mars Hill pass, went around Lions goalkeeper Tori Stajduhar and hit a shot from five yards out that hit the goal post and then bounced into the center of the net. It was her first goal of the season.
“I am proud of our effort tonight. We had another game where we out-shot our opponents by a wide margin and found a way to win,” stated Asheville head coach Michelle Demko. “The players did a great job executing the game plan and did not waver one minute. Lightning breaks can be difficult because you have to sit around for a while. We spoke about a few tactical adjustments and maintained our mentality. This was a great win, a well deserved win, and they should enjoy the feeling.
Mars Hill had five of its seven shots in the second half and all of them were dangerous. Asheville goalkpeeper Heather Muller made four saves on five shots, including a semi-breakaway from Alyssa Morris with 20 minutes left.
The shutout was Muller’s second of the season. Stajduhar made nine saves for Mars Hill.
Asheville plays again at Alabama State on Friday night at 4 p.m. CST.
