WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington was able to win three close sets and edged UNC Asheville 3-1 in the Bulldogs first match in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire UNCW Volleyball Classic. The Seahawks won the match 25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 25-22.


The Bulldogs were led by Christine Lakatos with 13 kills and eight digs. Anna Moore finished with 11 kills, while Rachel Wells added a game-high 22 digs.


UNCW posted a 25-21 victory in the opening set, tallying five of the final six points of the frame to pull away from the Bulldogs and record the four-point victory.


The Seahawks would take a back-and-forth second set that featured a total of 13 ties and four lead changes, 26-24, by using a kill from Desjardins and a Bulldog attack error to break a 24-all tie.


Asheville extended the match with a 25-23 victory in the third set, but the Seahawks rebounded to capture the match with a 25-22 victory in a fourth frame that saw UNCW build a 15-9 cushion and hold off the Bulldogs the rest of the way.


Asheville plays twice on Saturday. The Bulldogs play Mercer at 1 p.m., followed by a match with North Carolina A&T at 5 p.m.
