ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Kyle Breitmeyer scored in the 73th minute off a free kick as Liberty edged UNC Asheville 1-0 in Big South Conference men’s soccer action at Greenwood Field Saturday afternoon.

 

The win is the Flames (4-3-0, 1-2-0) first in Big South Conference play. Asheville fell to 3-5-0 and 0-1-0 in league action.

 

Asheville just missed scoring late in the first half and early in the second half. Andrew Sotak’s header just sailed wide of the Liberty goal in the 40th minute.

 

Early in the second half, Bobby Castro just missed a shot inside the Liberty goalmouth.

 

Asheville goalkeeper Dan Jackson played well in defeat with six saves. Scott Sutarik made two saves for the shutout for the Flames.

 

Liberty out-shot the Dogs 15-8 and had the run of play throughout the game only to see the Bulldogs come very close to scoring on their chances.

 

The game remained scoreless until Asheville was called for a foul from about 20 yards out. Tim Harbison’s free kick sailed toward the Bulldog goal. Breitmeyer managed to get his foot on it and re-directed the kick into the back of the goal for a 1-0 Liberty lead at 73:38.

 

Jonatan Torres just missed adding another goal for the Flames with five minutes when his shot hit the right goal-post and bounced out.

 

Kenny Lingerfelt led the Asheville offense with five shots. Breitmeyer had four for the Flames.

 

The Bulldogs host Wisconsin-Green Bay on Tuesday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 3 p.m. Liberty travels to High Point for a 7 p.m. league contest.
