ASHEVILLE, N.C. – In their first home meet of the season for the UNC Asheville women’s swim team the Bulldogs earned a 135-125 victory over Radford on Friday evening at Justice Center Pool, as the meet came down to the final event of the evening - the 200 yard freestyle relay.
“I could not be more proud of how our team stepped up today,” said Asheville head coach Elizabeth Lykins. “We had an incredible meet tonight where every team member was important.”
The Bulldogs held a 124-119 lead after Asheville’s Galen Broido won the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:40.92, her third first place finish of the night. In the 200 yard freestyle relay the Bulldog team of Ashley Ireland, Alice Emm, Kristen Lawson and Reid Jackson (1:41.10) held off the Radford squad of Jessica Frazelle, Laura Bradley, Elena Acevedo and Yvonne Smith (1:42.76), finishing 1.67 seconds ahead of the Highlander “A” team.
“Alice Emm swam through some tough struggles to earn valuable points for the team,” added Lykins. “Galen Broido was excellent tonight, winning three individual races and contributing in the 400 medley relay.”
With the victory in the final event the Bulldogs were able to take the meet against Radford in front of a standing-room only crowd at Justice Pool. Asheville is now 3-3 in meets this season.
“The home crowd fans were awesome,” said Lykins. “When it came down to the last relay for the win, you could hardly hear yourself think.”
The Blue & White led off the meet with a first place finish in the 400 yard medley relay, as the team of Alessandra Troncoso, Alexandra Van Dorsten, Emm and Jackson earned a time of 4:03.36. Broido then earned her first victory of the night, winning the 1,000 yard free style with a time of 10:46.59.
Van Dorsten took the top spot in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:59.00 before Jackson took home the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.78.
