ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Maurice Ndour scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Ohio rallied past UNC Asheville 79-70 at Kimmel Arena Saturday afternoon.


The Bulldogs (6-8) lost despite a career-high 28 points from freshman guard Andrew Rowsey. It was a school-record for points for an Asheville freshman.


Nick Kellogg added 23 points for the Bobcats (10-3) as Ohio rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit.


Asheville earned 11 points from Sam Hughes and 10 points from Jaron Lane.


The Bulldogs led 60-55 after a David Robertson free throw with seven minutes remaining before the Bobcats went on a 10-0 run to take the lead for good at 65-60. Kellogg and Ndour hit back-to-back three-pointers to help spur the run.


Asheville was within three late at 73-70 on a lay-up from Lane at the 28-second mark. But Ohio went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 25 seconds to earn the non-conference victory.


The Bobcats shot a sizzling .522 (12-of-23) from the field in the second half, while the Bulldogs shot .222 (6-of-27) from the field.


Ohio went 21-of-23 from the charity stripe in the second half as the Bobcats were in the bonus early in the half.


Asheville stunned the Bobcats early as Rowsey had four early treys to help give the home team a 30-15 lead at the 9:38 mark on two free throws from Jaleel Roberts.


The Bobcats cut the lead to 10 twice but each time Roswey sank a long three-pointer to help push the Bulldogs to a 43-31 halftime lead.


UNC Asheville opens Big South Conference play Wednesday night when the Bulldogs travel to Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.




It was Asheville’s first home loss of the season (4-1) and the Bulldogs fell to 30-7 at Kimmel Arena…Rowsey has scored more than 20 points in four different games and has scored in double figures in 13 of Asheville’s 14 games…Jaron Lane now has 946 career points…the Bulldogs five-game winning streak was snapped with the loss…the Bulldogs had seven blocks in the game and now have 40 blocked shots in the last four contests.
