ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team is on the road tonight at Longwood as the Bulldogs start a two-game Big South Conference road trip at Longwood starting at 7 p.m.
Tonight’s game can be seen for free via the Big South Digital network. Fans can access the game at uncabulldogs.com under the multimedia tag.
Asheville (5-9, 2-3 BSC) hopes to even its conference slate with the road win but it will not be easy against a solid Longwood squad. The Lancers (5-9, 2-3 BSC) made a surprise run to the Big South Conference title game last season and have the majority of their team back this season. They picked up an impressive non-conference victory over Xavier early in the season before some injuries to key players set them back. However, Longwood is healthy now and should be at 100 percent for tonight’s game.
"Longwood is a very talented and versatile team with many scoring threats,” stated second-year head coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “Daeisha Brown alone presents a challenge for opposing teams, and she is surrounded by players who have stepped up for Longwood so far this season. Our kids will have to play tough and disciplined for 40 minutes which is something we have been working on."
The Bulldogs have had a week off since falling to Winthrop, 68-49 at Kimmel Arena. Asheville trailed by 16 midway through the first half before rallying to tie the game at 40-40 in the second half. Winthrop went on a 19-0 run to seize control of the game and picked up the league victory.
Longwood had lost eight games in a row before winning two games on the road last week in league play. They slipped past PC, 46-43 and then rallied past Charleston Southern, 78-71. Brown leads the Lancers in scoring with a 17.8 average.
The Blue & White is being led in scoring by junior guard Brittany Gwyn with a 10.0 scoring average. She tops the Big South in free throw percentage at .864 (38-of-44). Gwyn has made her last 16 free throws and has not missed a free throw in more than a month.
Longwood has won the last four games in the series and slipped past the Bulldogs last year at Kimmel Arena, 67-54. The Lancers are 4-1 vs. Asheville and the Bulldogs are 0-2 at Longwood.
Asheville finishes the trip at Radford on Saturday. Game time at the Dedmon Center is 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally on WPEK Radio (880-AM) with the pre-game show starting at 1:55 p.m.
UNC Asheville is 1-1 on the road in league play and 1-4 overall. The Bulldogs are looking for their first ever win at Longwood.
Leading rebounder Jeannie Buckner (5.3) has missed the last two games with a hand injury. She is questionable for tonight.
Freshman guard Tianna Knuckes has scored in double figures in four of the last six games, including a career-high 21 point outburst vs. PC on Dec. 30. She grabbed a career-high nine rebounds vs. Winthrop (1-2).
Freshman center KJ Weaver is fourth in the Big South in blocked shots with a 1.50 (21) per game average.
Sophomore forward Leah Wormack is shooting .895 (17-of-19) from the free throw line in Big South Conference games.
