ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s swimming team battled hard on Saturday, but Georgia Southern had too much depth as the Lady Eagles recorded a 157-90 victory over the Bulldogs Saturday morning at Justice Center Pool.

“I was happy with our racing efforts today.  It was nice to have a home meet for the first time in 2014,” stated Asheville coach Elizabeth Lykins. “We are especially proud of senior Hallie Gillespie who swam her first race since undergoing back surgery in early October as part of the 200 freestyle relay.”

The Bulldogs (4-5) started out strong with a win in the 400 medley relay. The foursome of Reid Jackson, Alessandra Troncoso, Ashley Ireland and Emily Sawyer posted a time of 4:13.76.

Troncoso captured the 200 breastroke with a time of 2:30.15. Asheville went 1-2 in the 400 individual medley. Galen Broido took first with a time of 4:51.51. Kristen Lawson came in second place at 5:07.51.

Rachel Van Noordt had a lifetime best in the 500 freestyle at 5:41.80. She dropped 10 seconds off her previous best time.

The Bulldogs also got a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. Asheville's A team of Reid Jackson, Emily Sawyer, Kristen Lawson and Alexandra van Dorsten posted a time of 1:44.82

Asheville will compete again on Friday, Jan. 31 in its final home meet of the year against Brenau University at 5 p.m.

“We look forward to our last home meet of the season on Friday against Brenau,” said Lykins. “We are excited about the expected large home crowd for that meet.”
