ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Andrew Rowsey scored 35 points, and Jaron Lane added a career-high 27 points but it was not enough to slow down VMI as the Keydets won a wild 109-105 Big South Conference battle over homestanding UNC Asheville Tuesday night. 

 

The Keydets (11-9, 4-3 BSC) were led by freshman guard Q.J. Peterson with 37 points, while Rodney Glasgow added 35 points.  Peterson went 13-of-22 from the field and grabbed 15 rebounds. Glasgow was 5-of-11 from the three-point line, 8-of-9 from the charity stripe and dished out 10 assists. D.J. Covington chipped in 13 points and had six blocked shots.

 

David Robertson added 14 points and a career-best seven assists for the Bulldogs. D.J. Cunningham had 10 points, seven blocked shots and 13 rebounds.

 

Lane collected a career-best 15 rebounds and handed out six assists. The senior forward went 7-of-13 from the field and 12-of-14 from the line. Rowsey tied his career-high with 35 points as he was 10-of-18 from the field and a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line.

 

The 37 points scored by Peterson was the most by a player at Kimmel Arena.

 

The game was tied at 89-89 with seven minutes left when VMI made one last run to take the lead for good. The Keydets went on an 8-1 run as four different VMI players scored to put the visitors in front for good at 97-90 with 4:30 left.

 

Asheville closed to 97-94 on two lay-ups from Lane. But Glasgow nailed a long trey on the next possession to put VMI in front 100-94. The Bulldogs could get no closer than five points until hitting a three-pointer at the buzzer.

 

In the first half, Asheville controlled play early and raced to a 37-26 lead on a four-point play from Rowsey at the 9:01 mark.

 

But VMI dominated the backboards in the opening half. The Keydets out-rebounded the Bulldogs 26-17 and had 15 offensive rebounds to none for Asheville. VMI had a 13-0 advantage in second-chance points as the Keydets closed to 56-55 at halftime.

 

Asheville shot .613 (19-of-31) in the first half and .833 from the three-point line (5-of-6) but was undone by VMI’s ferocious rebounding.

 

Peterson had 22 points and nine rebounds for the Keydets in the first half. Rowsey had 20 points for the Bulldogs in the first half.

 

VMI took the lead for the first time early in the second half as it scored the first six points of the half to lead 61-56. Peterson’s trey built the lead to 72-65 at the 14:06 mark.

 

Asheville raced back with a 20-10 run over the next five minutes to sprint to an 85-82 lead. Rowsey scored 13 points during the run.

 

Glasgow’s long three-pointer put VMI back in front 89-87 before a tap-in by Corey Littlejohn tied the game at 89-89.

 

VMI shot .543 (19-of-35) from the field in the second half and was 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs cooled off in the second half with their shooting as they shot just .349 (15-of-43) and 30 percent (4-of-13) from the three-point line.

 

Glasgow tallied 22 points in the second half. Cunningham pulled down 11 rebounds in the second half for the Bulldogs.

 

UNC Asheville visits Big South foe Longwood Saturday at 5 p.m. VMI hosts Presbyterian College at Cameron Hall Friday night at 7 p.m.

D.J. Cunningham moved into fourth place and the school’s Division I all-time leader in rebounds and now has 715…Cunningham has seven double-doubles on the year and three in the last four games…Jaron Lane earned his second double-double of his career and has now scored at least 20 points in three straight games for the first time in his career…the Bulldogs fell to 19-4 at Kimmel Arena against BSC teams.
