ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville women’s basketball team hits the road on Saturday for a date with Big South-leading Winthrop at 1 p.m. in a game that can be seen on ESPN3.

Saturday’s game can also be heard locally on WPEK Radio (880-AM) with the pre-game show starting at 12:55 p.m.

The Bulldogs (9-13, 6-7 BSC) look to break a two-game losing streak suffered last week in losses at Presbyterian College and Gardner-Webb.

Asheville plays a Winthrop (17-6, 11-3 BSC) squad that has won five games in a row and moved into first place in the league standings. The Lady Eagles used a late run to down the Bulldogs on Jan. 2 at Kimmel Arena, 68-49. Asheville trailed by 14 in the first half but roared back to tie the game midway through the second half before the Eagles went on a 14-0 run.

“Winthrop is a very multi-dimensional team offensively that poses threats in both the half court and in transition. We have used our bye week not only to prepare for this challenge but to work some individual weaknesses in our game,” stated second-year Bulldog coach Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick. “We are excited for another opportunity to see how we measure up against the best team in the league.”

Sophomore guard Paige Love and junior guard Shonese Jones lead Asheville in scoring as they each have a 10.0 scoring average. Love tops the club in rebounding with a 5.6 average.

The Bulldogs finally return home to start a two-game homestand on Thursday when they host Radford at Kimmel Arena starting at 2 p.m. Next Saturday will be Asheville’s annual “Pink Game” as the Bulldogs entertain Longwood starting at 2 p.m.

The Pink Game activities will actually start at Noon with a women’s expo that will feature a shopping event with top retailers in the Asheville area.

Following the game, there will be a wine & cheese social in Kimmel Arena, followed by a fashion show. The last event will be an action for a one-year lease on a Volkswagen Jetta.

Tickets are just $25 and can be purchased at
