ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville senior women's tennis player Zoe Hamel received a fellowship to  graduate school at the prestigious University of Vancouver in British Columbia.

Hamel, who has been a four-year starter for the Bulldogs, played #1 the past three seasons. She will be majoring in pure math with a concentration in number theory. The University of Vancouver is one of the top 30 institutions in the world for pure math. She will begin her studies in September.

"I'm very excited to be accepted into the University of Vancouver," Hamel said recently. "It's an outstanding institution and I feel fortunate to be accepted into such a prestigious program.

"I have to thank all my wonderful professors at UNC Asheville who have helped me accomplish so much in the classroom," Hamel added. "Without their guidance, I wouldn't be going to Vancouver."

Zoe came to UNC Asheville without ever seeing the campus. She grew up in Sedan, France, about two hours east of Paris and just 10 minutes from Belgium.

"I was looking for a school to play tennis in America, and UNC Asheville seemed like a good place," stated Hamel."I knew someone that knew Coach Gregory (head coach Lise Gregory), and then I talked to Adrien (Langeard, a member of the Bulldog men's tennis team who is also from France). Once I talked to Adrien, Asheville seemed like to place for me to go to school."

Zoe has enjoyed her time in Asheville.

"UNC Asheville has been a really great experience for me," Hamel said. "I have been challenged in the classroom and on the tennis court. Coach Gregory has been a wonderful coach, and my teammates have been great to work with. I couldn't be happier with my time at Asheville."

Before going to Vancouver to begin her graduate school work, she and the Bulldogs still have some work to do on the court. Zoe, the only senior on the roster, has led a young Bulldog team to an 8-3 start to the 2014 season, including a 2-0 mark in Big South Conference play. Hamel is 7-3 at #1 singles and has posted a 10-1 record in doubles with Ericka Rivero.
