ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Corey Randall pitched a four-hitter to lead UNC Asheville to a 2-1 Big South Conference victory over visiting Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at Greenwood Field.

Randall’s (1-3) gem allowed the Bulldogs (10-22, 4-8 BSC) to salvage a game from the three-game series with the Chanticleers (14-19, 6-6 BSC). CCU won the first two games, 9-7, 9-4.

The sophomore right-hander pitched Asheville’s first complete game of the season by allowing just one run in the first inning, striking out four and walking two.

Chase Adkins (0-3) was hard-luck loser for the Chanticleers. He pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts and one walk.  Tyler Chadwick had two off CCU’s hits in the game.

Coastal Carolina opened the scoring in the first inning. Connor Owings hit the first pitch of the game for a double. He scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Zach Remillard for a 1-0 CCU lead.

The Bulldogs manufactured a run in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1. Lucas Owens led the inning off and was hit by a pitch. He went to second on a wild pitch. Erik Connolly sacrificed him to third. Derek Smith’s ground-out scored Owens to make it 1-1.

Asheville took the lead for good one inning later. Tanner Bush led off with a bunt single. He went to second on a ground-out. With two outs, Hunter Bryant delivered a run-scoring single to left field as Bush scored to put the Bulldogs in front, 2-1.

That was more than enough for Randall. He picked off a Coastal runner in the seventh inning at second base. Randall walked the lead-off hitter in the ninth but got Remillard to hit into a double-play. He then got Chadwick to ground out to end the game.

“Corey Randall was just tremendous today,” commented Bulldog coach Tom Smith. “He’s pitched well out of the bullpen, so we gave him a start this afternoon and was just sensational. We played good defense behind him and got a big win. I wish we could have won one more this weekend but at least we got this one.”

Coastal Carolina plays next at UNC Chapel Hill Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs continue their homestand Tuesday when they host Davidson College at Greenwood Field starting at 6 p.m. They’ll play Western Carolina Wednesday night at Greenwood Field and will dedicate the new lights prior to the contest.
