Baseball Falls At Liberty In Series Opener, 7-4

LYNCHBURG, Va. – With the score tied at four runs apiece late in the contest the No. 30 ranked Liberty Flames rallied for three runs en route to a 7-4 victory over UNC Asheville on Friday evening, in the first game of a three-game Big South Conference series this weekend.

 

With the win the Flames improve to 33-10 overall with a 17-1 record in the league while Asheville drops to 12-30 on the season and 4-14 in the Big South.

 

Rightfielder Phillip Treadway went 2-for-5 at the plate with a run batted in and a run scored, while second baseman Kyle Towles was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored for the Bulldogs.

 

Senior hurler Dean Roland (2-4) was credited with the loss for the Blue & White, allowing five runs on five hits (four earned) in seven innings of work – striking out nine batters in the contest. The nine K’s were a season-high for Roland.

 

Liberty’s Matt Marsh picked up the win in a relief appearance to improve to 2-0 on the season, tossing one scoreless inning while striking out two Bulldogs. Trey Lambert got the start for the Flames and allowed four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.

 

Alex Close was 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Liberty and Dalton Britt was 1-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Ashton Perritt was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while moving from centerfield to pitcher in the top of the ninth to pick up his 10th save of the season.

 

The two teams will play tomorrow at Liberty Baseball Field beginning at 3 p.m.
